Abstract
The effect of B-1 3-glucan on the infection of chicken with Salmonella enterica servoar Enteritidis was investigated. The addition of B-1 3-glucan in the feed reduced the infection : the number of the bacteria in the spleen or the liver after infection was reduced as a function of the amount of B-1 3glucan in the chicken feed. There were three possibilities for this observation : B-1 3-glucan blocked the adsorption of the bacteria to the epithelial surfaceincreased the ability of macrophages to associate with the bacteriaand enhanced the bactericidal activity of the macrophages. Ex vivo experiments indicated that major action of B-1 3-glucan appeared to be enhancement of the killing ability of macrophages.
