Abstract
The experiment was conducted on well drained loamy soils near Victoria Mill in the Herbert River district North Queensland.Nine different forms of nitrogen fertilizers were tested to investigate the effectiveness of a variety of physical and chemical methods for reducing nitrogen losses.Other forms of commercially available nitrogen fertilizers such as ammonium nitrate and urea-ammonium nitrate were also tested in this experiment.Nitrogen losses and transformation were determined by the nitrogen balance using the microplot technique. The N 15 balance and direct measurement of ammonia volatilization by the micrometeorological method were also conducted in association with this experiment. The addition of KCI and mixing urea with NBPT was found to reduce nitrogen loss.Urea large granuleULG was less useful than urea KCI and Urea NBPT.However it was found to reduce nitrogen loss by up to 22. The different forms of nitrogen fertilizers tested in this experiment reduced ammonia loss and all were superior to urea.
