Abstract

Surface application of urea often results in low plant recovery due to high ammonia volatilisation loss.A glasshouse study was carried out to investigate the effects of Ca Mg and K salts co-applied with urea on N utilisation efficiency of maize Zea mays L.Maize plants planted in pots containing 10kg og Bungor soil Typic Paleudult0-15cm. The treatments consisted of Urea control. Urea Ca Urea Mg and Urea K at 0.5 and 1.0 cation/N chemical equivalent. The cations were applied together with 15N labelled urea 8.842 a.e or at one week after urea application to one week-old plants at the rate of 150 kg N/ha.At harvest 8 weeks after germinationplant and soil samples were collected for total N and 15N analysis.Cations applied with urea increased N concentration N uptake and plant dry matter weight.Application of urea with Ca Mg and K salts increased both fertilizer and soil N uptake.More fertilizer N was recovered in the soil in which urea was co-applied with the soluble salts. All the soluble salts co-applied with urea were effective in reducing ammonia volatilisation loss.Ammonia loss was reduced from 37 to less than 21. The plants treated with urea co-applied with soluble salts gave the highest fertilizer N utilization efficiency due to lower fertilizer loss and high fertilizer N recovery. The fertilizer N utilization efficiency was increased from 25 to more than 35.
