Abstract

Root distribution of shrub pepper Piper nigrum Linn variety Sarawak was evaluated to ascertain a more appropriate fertilizer schedule. The experiment was conducted under field condition in Trad Soils typic Paleudults at Chanthaburi Horticulture Research Center located in the eastern part of Thailand. The treatments were arranged in 3x3 Factorial in RCB with three replications.Four holes around the plant were used for injecting 11.1 MBq/3 ml of P-32 labelled solution as carrier of 1000 ppm PKH2PO4 at various distances and depths. At each distances 15 30 and 50 cm for the first year 30 50 and 60 cm for the second year and 50 60 and 70 cm for the third and fourth year after planting infections were made at 3 depths:5 10 and 20 cm respectively. After P-32 labelled solution was injected for two weeks the first leaf sampling was taken with the second leaf sampling one month later.Liquid Scintillation counter was used for P-32 measurement by Cerenkov technique. The results showed that at 10-13 months after planting the higher active root was 15 cm away from plant and at 10 cm depth15 months after planting there was dense root activity at 30 to 50 cm away from plant and at 5 cm depth. The harvesting period was from 29 to 31 months. At 34 months after planting highest root activity was at 50 and 60 cm away from plant and at 20 cm depth. At 35 months the root distribution pattern showed a high concentration of active roots at distances between 50 to 70 cm away from plant and at 5 cm depth. At 36 38 and 39 months after planting the zone of high density active root was at 70 cm away from plant and at 10 cm depth. It was concluded that for maximum utilisation of fertilizer it should be applied in the zone of highest root activity.
