Dodson C.H., . (2005) Orchid classification. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
It is probably true that plant classification is more important to orchid ensthusiasts than to any other horticultural group. The orchid family is the largest of all vascular plant families with more than 10 of the species. To keep the species in order so that communication about them is feasible we place them in genera and species. Thus a Japanese person in Japan and an Ecuadorian in Ecuador need only to recite the genus and species name of Phragmipedium bessae and both persons know what plant is being discussed. Few however really understand the terms genus and species.
