Abstract

Milk production systems in subtropical and tropical Australia currently have a higher total cost structure than systems in Victoria and New Zealand. This has resulted from a traditional alignment with market regulation based on minimum daily quotas and from the costs of environmental modifications needed to enable the adoption of temperate plants primarily ryegrass and animals Holstein Freisian cows in the region. In the longer term the industry needs to further develop those aspects of the production system which give a competitive advantage in the global marketplace. A priority for further research is suggested to be a systems analysis of the use of tropical forages and adapted cows to gain efficiencies in production systems.
