Abstract

Two trials were carried out to evaluate the growth performance and carcass yeild of five strains of white-feathered commercial broiler currentlyavailable in Malaysia. These were the Arbor Acre Avian Cobb Hubbard and Ross strains. Trial I was carried over 42 days while trial II lasted over 38 days. The trial was carried out in a conventional slatted-floor open house utilizing commercial-type of feed. Standard management practice was adopted. The parameters investigated were body weight feed intake feed conversion ratio FCRand carcass yeild. Results showed that broilers raised to the age of 42 days achieved an average FCR of 1.71 and yielded a combined-sex carcass yield average of 74.1. Over a rearing period of 38 days the corresponding figures recorded were 2.07 kg 3.18 kg/bird 1.58 and 72.6. Generally all strains exhibited equivalent growth performance and carcass yeildthey were also superior to birds of over a decade ago.
