Abstract

In a completely randomized design experiment 90 day old chicks were divided into 5 treatment groups and given the following dietry regimes. During the brooding period day 0-week 2 all birds were offered a commercial starter ration containing 21 crude protein CP. Following the brooding period the birds were offered a commercial grower ration to which was added 0 5 10 15 and 20 banana stem meal BSM respectively for two weeks. During the finishing period weeks 5-6 all birds in all treatments were given a commercial finisher ration containing 20 CP and 3100 kcal/kg ME. Each treatment was replicated 3 times with 6 birds in each replicate. Weekly body weight body weight gain feed intake and feed conversion ratio data were obtained and subjected to analyses of variance. The results showed that between 0-2 weeks there were no significant differences in body weight gain and feed intake. During the growing period 3-4 weeks there was significant reduction in growth performance and efficiency in birds fed Diet 5 as compared to the other diets. During the finishing peroid 5-6 weeks there were no significant differences in the final body weight but there was an improvement in the FCR and a significant increase in weight gains. The results suggest that there was compensatory growth as a result of poor nutrition during the third and fourth week of the growing period.
