Abstract
The Himalayas and the Andes are the repository of most of the 20 000-odd orchid species. Ironically these regions are also home to some of the worlds poorest economies. With the recent worldwide interest in eco-tourism countries with rich natural resources are looking to cash in on them as a means to economic growth. They hope to bring prosperity to people who have failed to keep up with conventional development.
