Abstract

Dendrobium moniliforme distributed mainly in the far north of the area stretching from China to Japan is resistant to the cold. Den. moniliforme has held an important position for many years in Japanese horticultural history. In particular leaf variegation once held higher importance as an ornamental factor than the flower. Today many excellent hybrids with showy flowers have been bred using Den. moniliforme. In Japan Den. moniliforme flowers in June after breaking from its dormant winter condition. However hybrids between Den. moniliforme and other species of the Section Dendrobium have enhanced cold-sensitivity and floral initiation occurs more easily. So after a short chilling period vernalization these hybrids can flower earlier in greenhouse and then be sold commercially in December as gifts at a higher value. Moreover flowering occurs on a current year bulb with leaves while flowering in Den. nobile strains occurs on previous year bulbs without leaves. Hence the hybrids flower one year earlier. However the hybrids normally have smaller flowers which may at times be a disadvantage. To improve this a tetraploid cultivar had been used in hybridization. In this work flower morphology and chromosome number of Den. moniliforme hybrids were studied.
