Abstract
The planning aspects of a tripartite project towards the development and implementation of a sustainable forest management system of a large timber concession are discussed. The three parties involved are the Forest Department Sarawak the German Agency Technical Co-operation GTZ and Samling Strategic Corporation the holder of a 169 000 hectare timber concession in Upper Baram Sarawak. The project initiated in 1998 under Phase 2 of the Forest Information System Sarawak FOMISSProject introduced state-of-the-art forest resource assessment management planning implementation and monitoring of forest operations that would comply with internationally accepted requirements of sustainable forest management. A comprehensive integrated forest management planhas been prepared using a multi-disciplinary approach. Important features of this forest management plan are elaborated. These features are aimed at achieving an ecologically sound economically viable and socially acceptable forest management system in Sarawak.
