Abstract

This paper examines the effects of silvicultural treatments and starting basal area on the growth and development of residual stands after logging in the hill dipterocarp forest. The data were collected from research plots in the Kledang Saiong Forest Reserve Perak over a four-year period 1990-1994 immediately after silvicultural treatment. The study found that the average stocking of trees 50mm dbh after treatment was 1 043 stems ha-1 with the average periodic mean annual increment PMAIs for stocking being 12 stems ha-1yr1 1.20. The average periodic mean annual ingrowth PMAIn was 48 stems ha-1yr1 4.82 and periodic mean annual mortality PMAM was 30 stems ha-1yr1 3.01. The average basal area of trees 50 mm dbh was 23.86 m2 ha-1 and the average PMA1B for basal area was 0.61m2.ha-1yr1 2.85. The average PMAId for diameter for trees 50 mm dbh was 7.4 mm.yr1 with the meranti group having higher growth rate 9.5 mm yr1. The preliminary results also showed that a silvicultural treatment of cutting lianas climbers with or without girdling of selected trees and a residual basal area of 20-25 m2 ha-1 gave better growth off the hill dipterocarp forest both in terms of stand increment and individual tree growth after logging.
