Abstract

In 1989 the State of Sarawak invited a mission from the International Tropical Timber Organization ITTO to advise on sustainable forestry management practices. The ITTO report took a holistic view of such management and included biodiversity conservation into its planning. One recommendation was that six million hectares and one million hectares respectively be constituted as permanent forest estate PFE and totally protected areas TPAs. The forest department has further developed the holistic approach by working with the Wildlife Conservation Society WCS to prepare and to implement a Master plan for Wildlife. Steps taken so far include new ordinances facilitating establishment of TPAs and a total ban on all commercial sales of wildlife taken from the wild including wild meat. This is being put into effect by wide-ranging programme for Forest Department staff with Lincoln University improved TPA management with ITTO and DANCED and improved wildlife conservation in the PFE in collaboration with licences
