Abstract
Whisk fern or moa Psilotum nudum which is often used to complement orchids in flower arrangements appears to be effective in prolonging the vase life of Dendrobium Jaq-Hawaii Uniwai Pearl. Three of these inflorescences were placed in each of five flasks containing 500 ml of tap water. One flask was used as a control. The others contained respectively a chemical preservative two four and six moa branches. All were kept in a room at a temperature of 20C and at 75 relative humidity. Flower drop was observed every other day for 21 days. Bacterial colonies were counted on the 4th day and pH of solutions was tested on the 7th day. The antibacterial effect on moa was measured using a filter paper disc-agar diffusion test on the 4th day.
