Abstract

To ensure the forestry industrys continued contribution to the states revenue and the economic development the Sabah Forestry Department has taken bold steps towards achieving sustainable forest management. Many changes within the Department are underway to support this goal. Environmental education is considered vital to bring about positive changes in the attitudes and behaviour of the public towards the forest and the environment as a whole. This is in line with the concept of sustainable forest management that includes the change of attitudes concerning the ecological and social functions of forests. Thus an environmental education programme was developed in 1996. targeting school students teachers and the public. It main objective is to raise the level of awareness og our target groups on the importance of the forest and its conservation. later this objective was enhanced by infusing sustainable forest development concepts in certain activities. This paper will introduce the programme and focus on some activities we conducted to support this objective.
