Abstract

We conducted a bear management program Bear Shepherding using Karelian Bear Dogs in Karuizawa town from Aug 19th through Aug 27th in 2003. The town has Asiatic Black Bear Ursus thibetanus problems in residential areas as bears visit houses to eat unnatural food and damaged property. With this program we discovered that with dogs we could more effectively scare a bear away compared to the same without dogs. The behavior of the bear changed after being chased by dogs and it did not come back to the area where as in 2002 it was not willing to leave when chased by people. It also proved that we could chase bears to a preferred place safely if we do it right even in a residential area where houses are built close to one another.
