Abstract

Information technology has since the eighties been recognised by the Forest Department of Sarawak as a powerful tool to support and improve forest management in the State. Computer-Assissted Remote Sensing RS and Geographical Information System GIS was first introduced in 1990 to enable more efficient and accurate gathering and processing of forest related spatial data. Aerial photographs and satellite imageries were used for remote sensing activities such as land use and land cover monitoring and mapping of logging road network. The increased concern for sustainability and the environment has led to a greater degree of complexity of the planning process with planning requiring improved forest monitoring capabalities and tools to observe changes for both forest operators and the regulatory authorities.Some of the applications developed for forest resources management with the use of high resolution satellite imagery and digital aerial imagery are presented. Digital data presented many advantages in that it provides large area analysis high resolution with geometrical accuracy and most of all it is scalable being in digital format.
