Abstract

Growth and yield information is important for planning and managing a forest plantation. Trees growth varies considerably with age and site. The growth and yield of Azadirachta excelsa up to 10 years from a variety of sites and under different management practices in Peninsular Malaysia were assessed. The oldest stand surveyed was 9-years while the youngest stand averaged 5.5 years. The stand dbh generally increases fairly rapidly. The mean annual increment MAI for dbh ranges from 1.4 to 2.5 cm yr. High MAI values were recorded for stands which were more intensively managed. Mean height also showed a similar trend and the MAI for height ranged from 1.08 to 1.83 m yr. Growth functions were developed for dbh and height with age. Both equations had high R values 0.82 for dbh and 0.69 for height. The estimated yield in terms of volume at the different ages is presented and the results suggest that the trees will continue to maintain growth for some time into the future. With appropriate management - fertilizer application thinning weeding and pruning the expected growth and yield may be improved.
