Abstract

A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of thinning on ring width and ring density of 100-year-old Japanese cedar sugi. A 110-year-old stand 2.3 ha in Yoshino was used for the investigation. In the year 1960-2003 the stand has been thinned four times namely in 1964 1982 1995 and 2003. After the 2003 thinning 28 disks were taken from tree stumps to investigate the radial changes in ring width and basic density. A soft X-ray densitometry was used in the measurement. The total number of rings in each disk was between 105 and 112. An increase in ring width was observed 3 years after thinning with ring formation of about 2.1 mm wide. A decrease in ring density was observed after 5 years of thinning but no sudden change prior to thinning was detected. Thinning is important in the production of high quality timber with uniform ring width of aroung 2 mm.
