Abstract
This paper highlights some important properties of rattan that need to be understood by those who intended to utilize them for either making intermediate or final rattan products. A good understanding of rattans properties would recovery rate at the processing stages and thus result in the production of quality rattan products. Misconception in understanding of the properties was one of the major factors that lead to the decline of the rattan industry in recent years. In 1994 Malaysia exported RM113 million worth of rattan products however only RM52 million was exported in 2003. The paper will further discuss the prospect of setting up rattan transformation and processing industry for upgrading the livelihood of the rural people in Malaysia. This industry is best run on a cooperative system as it will involve the whole community in the rural areas. The economic aspects in setting up of the industry will also be discussed.
