Abstract

Sarawak comprising of various ethnic communities has a unique and vast knowledge on the uses of plant for medicinal purposes. Considering the improtance of such knowlwdge the Sarawak Herbarium a research branch in the Forest Department has started the ethnobotanical project in early 1970s. The project is aimed to record information and to collect plant samples for the Herbarium. By the year 2000 a total of 2 371 plant specimens have been collected. In 1990 the Ethnobotanical Garden was established at Semengoh Botanical Research Centre. To date the garden has planted about 800 species of medicinal plants used by various ethnic groups in Sarawak. This paper disscussed some of the plants used in traditional practices.
