Abstract

EIA is a study process used to predict the effects of a proposed development project on its environment people and/or their homeland and other development projects. In Sarawak the procedures for EIA is governed by the law the Natural Resources and Environment Prescribed Activities Order 1994. The EIA process involved determining the scope and depth of coverage of the EIA study basedline data collection preparation of EIA report submitting the EIA report to the NREB and approval of EIA report by the NREB. This process is meant to facilate the identification of environmental impact arising from the development activities so that practical and effectivemitigating measure can be prescribed for them. Environmental impacts arising from the development of planted forests are related to biomass removal and disposal road building tree planting pest and disease control forest harvesting and silvicultural treatments. In addition the development of planted forest may have significant social impacts since many rural communities in Sarawak still depend on forest resources for their livelihood and consequently the need to carefully address social issues is vital for the successfull implementation of the planted forest project.
