Abstract

The limitations in the humid tropics of producing grain corn sweetpotato and cassava roots as raw materials for the animal feed industry may be offset by turning these crops into silage for on-farm production and feeding. Ensiling whole plants of sweetpotato and cassava will improve the inherently low protein content of the roots alone. Of the three crops sweetpotato due to its large biomass production in a relatively short crop growth period yields the highest edible energy per hectare per day. Ensiling reduces cyanogen content in cassava to safe levels while inactivating the trypsin-inhibiting activity in sweetpotato roots.
