Abstract
Sabah has establishe 95 000 ha of planted forest over the past 25 years. The total area of productive forest in Sabah is just under 3 million ha. Of this some 1.5 million ha have been given out - largely to the private sector - for rehabilitation and environmentally friendly logging whilst a further 270 000 ha have been given out for plantation forestry. Wood production from plantation forests will enable Sabah retain a major timber industry whilst reducing the pressure on the indigenous forest. The majority of the plantation wood grown is destined for use in pulp manufacture but very serious efforts have and continue to be made to provide raw material for the existing wood processing industry which will have to change its equipment in order successfully to process small diameter logs. Tree breeding and species improvements is still in its infancy but important improvements have been achieved which have demonstrated how much and how quickly significant progress can be made.
