Abstract

A participatory community appraisal and a baseline survey were used to improve understanding of the integrated agriculture-aquaculture IAA farming systems in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. The common IAA farm type was garden-livestock-fish-rice in which the fish component could be a high semi-high or low input system. The total cultivated area and the number of working days per capita contributed significantly to per capita income for the farm households. Differences in management of IAA farms were related to the distance between the farm and the market and to the land use intensity of fish and rice.
