Abstract

The development activities of the peatland surrounding the Klias Forest Reserve and in particular the drainage associated with conversion to agricultural land use have been identified as a threat to the hydrological regimes of the forest reserve. Since the existence of access water prolonged period of time has formed and maintained the vegetation of this wetland type a permanent change in the water levels of dynamics of the hydrology is like to have a profound effects on the ecology and long-term viability of this ecosystem. In order to gain a better understanding of the hydrology in the Klias peat swamp forest a monitoring programme has been carried out starting in October 2002. The present paper is a summary and highlights some of the observations and conclusions made based on monitoring data for a period of two years. A comprehensive presentation is provided in the report Hydrological Assessment of the Klias Forest Reserve DANIDA 2004.
