Abstract

In 1996 Malaysia imported 1.09 million tonnes of wheat worth RM678 million Ministry of Primary Industries Malaysia 1997.However with the devaluation of the ringgit the current import value has exceeded RM 1 billion. This situation warrants serious consideration and the need to produce wheat locally is inevitable. Wheat research group has been established at Universiti Putra Malaysia with the objectives of 1 Studying the possibility of growing wheat in Malaysia 2 To obtain potential wheat lines under Malaysia climatic condition 3 To reduce import bill and 4 Ensure continuous supply of wheat to the nation. At UPM since 1993 about 200 wheat lines from CIMMYT and Bangladesh have been collected and evaluated out of which seven lines were found to be promising under Malaysia environment presently 175 lines are still being screened. Apart from the screening work future research will also focus on locational trial establishment of cultural and management practices and the study of rice wheat cropping system. Other factors which can act as constraint in wheat production such as pest and diseases soil requiremetn and acceptance of wheat as a new crop by the public will be given due consideration.
