Abstract

Sime Darby ventured into commercial aeroponic farming through its subsidiary Sime Aerogreen Technology Sdn. Bhd. to produce temperate and sub-tropical leafy vegetables from its farm located in Seremban. Aeroponic technology differs from other cultivation technologies in that the plants are suspended in growing troughts leaving the roots exposed for uptake of nutrient and oxygen in the air in the form of a mist. Plant growing parameters are controlled using an integrated computer system to attain optimum growing conditions for the plants. This environmentally friendly technology enables the production of quality temperate and sub-tropical vegetable thus an import substitution for Malaysia. More applications using the aeroponic technology are being researched to increase the product range.
