Abstract

Pineapple industry in Malaysia develops over the years from pineapple production on peat soils mainly for canning. Canned pineapple export declines from RM 78m in 1990 to RM 52m in 1997 Anon 1999. Fresh pineapple production is small and the export value is only RM 5m annually. However a 37 increase is expected in the next decade. There is a clear shift in smallholders preferance in cultivation of canning pineapple to fresh fruit pineapple. The potential of expanding the cultivation of fresh pineapple on mineral soil is good. From results obtained from production trial of Josapine at MARDI Research Station Jeram Pasu Kelantan in 1997-1998 it was found that the quality of fruits was good with TSS of 16-19 and 4-6 acid content. The average fruit size was 800-900 gm and a yield of 20 ton/ha considering 80 production was marketable was obtained. Time to harvest was 12-13 months after planting. Production of fresh pineapple on mineral soil not only produces better quality fruits but also could meet demand of fruits for local consumption at a lower production cost because most field operations can be mechanised.
