Abstract
Long term ex situ storage of plant germplasm is very important in order to maintain the genetic diversity and for the preservation of near-extinct species as more habitats become threatened due to man's activities. It has been estimated that nearly 70 of the Malaysian tropical forest species bear recalcitrant seeds. Conventional techniques have been unsuccessful to store recalcitrant seeded species that is often large in size high in moisture content and sensitive to low temperature. Cryopreservation has been found to be an effective and promising tool to conserve germplasm for long term storage. This paper highlight the research work using cryopreservation techniques such as desiccation encapsulation dehydration direct cooling slow cooling rapid thawing and ambient thawing that have been tested on tropical tree species.
