Commercialisation of cereal straw based structural panels in North America

Abstract

Alberta Research Councils Forest Products Business UnitARC has developed a variety of non-wood based panel technologies over the last seven years. The most innovative and commercially promising of these technologies is a product coined by ARC as Oriented Split Straw Board or OSSB. As the name implies a board with structural properties equivalent to OSSB can be produced by splitting gluing orienting and hot-pressing cereal straw in a similar fashion as is done to make OSB. OSSB technology was developed nearly six years ago however it is only now that it is being introduced commercially. Entreprenuers both inside and outside North America have secured licenses from ARC commercialise this technology. This paper will discuss ARDs OSSB technology and how structural panels can be made from straw. The discussion will then turn to the challenges involved in commercialising this technology and some of the technical challenges encountered in coverting the technology into practice in an actual production facility.
