Abstract
This study evaluated some of the important properties of three-layer particleboard panels made from bamboo Dendrocalamus asper and rice straw. A total of twenty experimental panels with average target density levels of 0.65 g/cm and 0.75g/cm were made from the mixture of 95 bamboo and 5 rice straw particles. Modulus of elasticity MOE modulus of rupture MOR internal bond strength IB thickness swelling TS density profiles and surface roughness of the specimens were determined. Samples with 0.75g/cm density had 34 percent and 27 percent higher MOE and MOR values than those of samples with target density of 0.65g/cm respectively. It appears that using 5 of rice straw in the panels did not significantly reduce both physical and mechanical properties of the samples. The panels made in this study satisfied strength requirements for general uses based on Japanese Standard. Measurement of surface characteristics of the samples resulted that such panels can be used as substrate for thin overlays without any significant problems. Initial findings of this study suggest that both non-wood under-utilized species can be considered as raw material manufacture value-added three-layer particleboard panels.
