Abstract

The objectives of this paper are to study basic properties and to access the technical and economic feasibility of combining bamboo with rubber wood for composite production. In this study a local bamboo species named Lo O Bambusa procera was used solely or combined with rubber wood that comes from over-matured rubber plantations for the production of composite products. The determinations of several mechanico-physical properties and chemical composition of this bamboo species were carried-out and based on these properties production parameters were designed. These properties varies according to positions in the stem. The average basal density of this bamboo was calculated at 670 kg/m3 and the alpha cellulose content was 52 a large composition of pentosan was found. Bamboo strips can be easily glued to rubberwood with several thermosetting resins however surface wettability of bamboo strips with glues was found as an important factor in the design of appropriate technologies for composites production. Glue infiltration rate in rubberwood was higher as compared with bamboo. Glue infiltration rate of bamboo strips made from the inner part of the stem was higher than those made from near skin portion. The combination of bamboo strips with food can helps establishing a sustainable source of raw material for the wood processing industry and producing new board products of high technical properties and recovery rate. A combined board structure was proposed consistings of rubberwood veneer faces and bamboo blockboard core in which bamboo strips from inner part of the stem were distributed alternatively with those from near skin portion of the bamboo stem. The processing of this products needs some adaptation from conventional process especially in bamboo strips cutting. An additional proposal was the production of particleboard production from this mixture of raw material from by products of wood and bamboo. The results of the study have been currently applied in several board production factories in Vietnam.
