Abstract
India is rich in hardwood species which are used in the manufacture of timber based commercial products including composites like plywood and blockboards. The powder post beetles attack the sapwood which is rich in starch both in finished and unfinished wood panel products and turn them into flour-like powder. Survey conducted in panel industries plywood and blockboard and households revealed that the blockboards plywoods and their products were highly infested by the borers especially lyctids causing heavy economic loss. Brush coating of chlorpyrifos at 0.01 and bifenthrin at 0.001 and also the botanical insecticides neem oil pongamia oil and cardanol at 10 30 and 10 level respectively proved effective against the attack by Lyctus africanus Lesne Coleoptera: Lyctidae on rubberwood veneers. Glue-line poisoning of plywood with bifenthrin 2.5 EC was carried out with phenol formaldehyde resin. Bifenthrin was used at four levels namely 2.5 g/ai/m3 5 ai/g/m3 10g ai/m3 and 20 g ai/m3. It was found that bifenthrin 2.5 EC at 10 g ai/m3 at 2.5 ml per kg resin proved very effective against L. africanus attack. The residual toxicity studies for the effective concentration of these pestcides namely 10 neem oil 30 pongamia oil 10 cardanol 0.01 chlorpyrifos and 0.001 bifenthrin indicated that the treatments protected the treated rubberwood veneers against L. africanus attack for a period of one year. Glue line poisoned with bifenthrin at 2.5 ml per kg resin phenol formaldehyde bonded plywood proved protected for a period of more than one year.
