Abstract
Phalaenopsis violacea is an economically important high priced scented orchid species which is endemic to the island of Borneo. The plants produce purple-white flowers which are extremely fragrant and they can bloom for several months particularly in the months of January to March. A study was conducted to select the plants having high anthocyanin content in flower petals of Phalaenopsis violacea. Flower petals were extracted to determine anthcyanin content using thin layer chromatography TLC and UV-spectrophotometer. The major pigments present in this flower are anthocyanins and petunidin is the main anthocyanidin. The anthocyanin content at different stages of flower development was determined in order to select the best plant producing high anthocyanin content.
