Abstract
Sulfer dioxide SO2 and nitrogen dioxide NO2 are the primary pollutants that were produced directly from mans industrial and domestic activities. One of the main sources of SO2 and NO2 is from transportation sector. High concentration of these pollutants in the atmosphere will affect plant activities. A study has been conducted on the effects of ambient NO2 and SO2 on a selected urban tree Mesua ferreal l. clusiaceae. locally known as Penaga Lilin. They were performed at three strategic locations in UPM main campus located at 3 deg C 02 N 101 deg 42 E. Photosynthesis and transpiration rates of Mesua ferreal l. clusiaceae. at three canopy zones namely upper middle and lower part were measured. Subsequently traffic volume together with concentration of SO2 and NO2 was recorded. Results of the study indicated that the net photosynthesis and transpiration rate of Measua ferreal l. clusiaceae was directly proportional to the concentrations of SO2 and NO2 whereby the higher the concentration of the pollutants i.e. higher traffic volume will lower the rate photosynthesis and transpiration. Leaves of upper canopy showed the highest photosynthesis and transpiration rates followed by middle and lower canopy respectively.
