Abstract
Rubberwood sawdust from furniture industry was used as filler in polypropylene composite. The sawdust was air dried for two weeks to achive a moisture content of less than 15. The sawdust was then screened using vibrating screening machine to classify into three size 40 60 and 80 mesh size. The screened sawdust was then oven- dried for 48 hours prior to mixing to achive a moisture of less than 5. Polypropylene as melted in dispersion mixer at temperature of 180c for 15 minutes and then sawdust at 10 30 and 50 filler loading was added. The composite was produced by hot pressing for about 10 minutes before going for cold pressing process for 2 minutes to produce test sample. The mechanical properties of the sample were tested according to ASTM Standards. The result indicated that bending and tensile properties of rubberwood sawdust-polypropylene composite decreased due to filler loading while modolus properties increased. The rubberwood-polypropylene composite is recommended for used in the manufacturing of products that does not require high strength properties.
