Abstract
The abaxial surface is covered by thick wax layer and interspersed randomly by elliptical-shaped stomata apparently absent on the adaxial surface. The cuticle on the adaxial surface is apparently three fold thicker than the abaxial surface. The elongated stomata were surrounded by slightly raised border that appears to be part of the subsidiary cells. Four strand-like cuticular apparatus at each end of the guard cells could probably be a characteristic to mangosteen. The abaxial and adaxial surface are covered by a single layer of epidermal cells. The mesophyll consisted of two tiers of closely packed palisade cells containing dense materials. The spongy cells consisted of interconnecting cells with thick walls. The xylem and phloem vessels are large and abundantly present. These inherent cellular features would apparently contribute to the overall slow growth of the plant.
