Abstract

The lumen loaded handsheets are prepared using the lumen loading technique. This study highlights the preparation of magnetic lumen loaded handsheets from mixed tropical hardwood bleached and unbleached pulps. The technique involved a physical approach whereby a filler is deposited inside the fiber lumen. Magnetic fillers are loaded into the fiber lumen in order to obtain a good fibre-fibre bonding. The magnetic filler chosen is magnetite which is cheap and widely used in making the magnetic tape recording. Polyacrylamide PAM is used as retention aids at different molecular weight. Scanning electron microscopy is used to observe the location of the magnetic particle deposited in the lumen and the distribution of the particle in the pulp. The effect of different molecular weight of PAM on filler content in the bleached and unbleached handsheets are studied. The results showed that the amount of filler deposited in the pulp fibres increased with increasing molecular weight of PAM using both pulps. However the bleached pulps gave better lumen loading than the unbleached when using high molecular weight PAM.
