Abstract
We investigated the current situation of woody biomass resources and their utilization in tropical Asia --- especially in Malaysia and in Indonesia. In this study we mainly focus on current utilization of wood residue which was categorized into three groupswood industry residue forest residue and tree crop estate residue. For residue from the wood industry it is sufficiently utilized with some exceptions. Some plywood and board factories installed combined heat and power CHP supply systems using wood residue as main fuel. They usually bought additional wood industry residue and coal from outside. For forest residue it is not sufficiently used in Malaysia due to the collection coston the other hand it is not sufficiently used in Malaysia due to the collection coston the other hand it is consumed as fuelwood and othe household materials by the local people in Java Indonesia. Thus for above two residues the available wood resources may be wuite limited compared to the original wuantity of wood. For tree crop residue the most promising one is from oil palm which comprises about 20 million tons dry base of trunk and empty fruit bunch EFB in both countries. Since the utilization ratio has been still low they have big potential to be utilized for material and energy productions. Some utilization plans are proposed in this study.
