Abstract

Malaysia is basically an agricultural country with vast areas being devoted to plantations. The animal industry is relatively small and being in the tropics obviously the farming systems is different from those in temperate countries. The control of diseases has been extremely good considering the many constraints involved and this is evident by the fact that the country is free of the many animal diseases of importance like rinderpest the foot and mouth disease (FMD) anthrax rabies glanders and others that are rampant in other countries in the region. The few diseases that occur are endemic usually inapparent and on the whole do not cause great economic losses or problems. In general there are three basic strategies in the control and prevention of diseases: a) identification and elimination of the source of infection; b) interrupting the route of spread or transmission of the disease and c) increasing the resistance of the animal to diseases. A review of published reports indicates only a small number of infectious diseases occurring in livestock in Malaysia and their occurrence are often sporadic in nature. It has been proven that with the right policy and control programmes these diseases can be controlled and perhaps eradicated. Some of the problems associated in the control of diseases prevailing in Malaysia are discussed in this paper
