Abstract
Seven burrows used by the Malaysian water monitor lizard Varanus s. salvator were studied in Timor Oil Palm Estate Pahang Malaysia. Burrows are located both on flat land and in river banks. Often an entrance started by sloping downwards but rose again creating a low point which was often filled with water. The average length of the studied burrows was 9.5 m and the depth ranged between 1.2 m - 2.4 m. The burrow temperatures varied between 25.0 degree - 27.8 degree Celcius. There was seasonal variation in burrow temperature and monsoon season was slightly cooler than the dry season. The lizards utilized the burrows mainly as sleeping sites and as refuge from predators.
