Abstract

Without control rats can consume about 700 kg of oil palm mesocarp per ha per year. Mesocarp has 50 per cent oil content. For a 2000 ha planting there would be a loss of 700 tonnes of oil and at an oil price of RM1300 per tonne this loss would be more than RM900 000 per year. For one settler with 4 ha the loss would be about 1 tonne or a value of RM 1900 per year. This loss can be easily reduced by control using rat bait at a cost of about RM 20 per ha.
