Pesticide residues in foods effected by crop protection practices

Abstract

Pesticide residues were monitored in rice and vegetables in the Philippines. Fish were also collected within the vicinity of the treated fields. Gas chromatographic results indicated that rice samples had no residues at harvest time because of the usual practice of harvesting rice 30 to 45 days after the last application of pesticides. However residues of methyl parathion were detected in fish. Some vegetables harvested 3 to 5 days after application of pesticides had pesticide residues exceeding the Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) set by FAO/WHO. A 5 to 7 day preharvest interval was safer for human consumption. Washing led to a 20 to 90 percent reduction of triazophos residues in eggplant and there was a 100 percent reduction with washing and cooking
