Abstract

Squabs from two varieties of pigeons the local and the European King were evaluated for carcass yield at the slaughter age of 4 weeks. In obsolute term the King pigeon squab was superior to that of the local birds; it had significantly heavier body weight defeathered weight and dressed weight than the local pigeon squabs (all P0.01). As percentages of live weight however differences between the two varieties for defeathered and dressed weights were small and not significant. The King pigeon squab yielded more meat in relation to bone than the local squab registering a mean meat-to-bone ratio of 2.68:1 as compared to the mean figure of 2.13:1 for the local variety (P0.01). Both varieties had low abdominal fat contents of between 0.4-0.5 percent of body weight the difference between varieties being non-significant
