Abstract
The effect of high (H) medium (M) and low (L) planes of nutrition on body weight (BW) body condition (BC) postpartum changes and resumption of postpartum ovarian activity determined from progesterone profiles was evaluated on 33 swamp buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis). Buffaloes resuming ovarian activity within sixty days postpartum were 66.7 (8/12) 16.7 (2/12) and 11.1 (1/9) percent for the H M and L group baffaloes respectively. By day 150 postpartum 88.7 percent of the L group buffaloes were anoestrus compared with 8.3 percent in the H and 0 percent in the M groups. Mean postpartum interval to first ovulation (PPO) was shorter (P0.06) in the H (60 days) than the M (84 days) group. The PPO in the only cycling buffalo in the L group was 49 days. The earlier resumption of postpartum ovarian activity was associated with a faster recovery of BW and BC while the delayed resumption was associated with a slower recovery of BW and BC after calving. It was concluded that high plane of nutrition enhanced whereas low plane of nutrition delayed the resumption of postpartum ovarian activity in swamp buffaloes
