Abstract

Ten (male and female) lesser mouse deer (Tragulus javanicus) captured from the jungles of Selangor and Pahang Malaysia were reared in captivity in the rumen microbiology laboratory University Pertanian Malaysia. Observations on behaviour and reproductive performance were carried out for a period of 40 months. The behaviour of lesser mouse deer was different from that of domestic ruminants and was more like that of a dog cat or rabbit. All the captured mouse deer and their subsequent offsprings reproduced well in stainless steel cages. Estrous cycle was estimated to be 14 to 16 cyclic days with two days of mating period. The earliest sexual maturities were 166 days for males and 125 days females. Estimated gestation period was 134 (plus minus) 2 days. Postpartum estrous occurred and copulation was observed 30 minutes to few hours after parturition. Mortality of the young (new born until weaning) was 12.7 percent
