Abstract

It is projected that by the year 2000 Malaysia will produce 8 million tonnes of CPO and correspondingly about 24 million tonnes of palm oil mill effluent (POME) will be generated. This large volume of POME can be recycled as organic fertilizer and as a source of water for crops including oil palm. One tonne (1000 litres) of POME containes the equivalent of 5.00 kd Sulphate of ammonia 1.30 kg Rock phosphate 4.60 kg Muriate of potash and 4.00 kg Kieserite. judicious application of POME in oil palm plantations is economically viable environmentally safe saves fertilizer cost and improves FFB yields by around 20 percent. Various methods of POME application to the oil palm field namely sprinkler/pipe irrigation flatbed/longbed furrow/gravity flow tractor-tank-pump systems are used. The tractor-tanker-pump system which is more economic when compared to the other systems gives a cost saving benefit on fertilizers of up to RM 50/ha in the first year and around RM 400/ha/yr in the subsequent years. The additional yield obtained through POME application is considered as a bonus
