Abstract

This is a short historical treatment of two notable but rather neglected pioneers of rubber research and cultivation namely E T H Gough and R J Chittenden of Prang Besar Estate. The estate was founded in 1921 and later became part of the Harrisons and Crosfield plantation group largely as a result of the visionary intervention of Sir Eric Macfadyen. Information about both the subjects is sparse and there is room for more research on them. Gough pioneered vegetative propagation in Malaysia in the early 1920s and established procedures for selecting clones and improved seedling stocks. Chittenden carried on his work from about 1930. Both contributed greatly to the lustre of the name Prang Besar in commercial rubber improvement. Prang Besar clones have been the leading planting materials in Malaysia in recent years and PB seedlings have had no competitors. The Malaysian rubber industry is greatly indebted to them
