Abstract
The economic impact of tourism development on the local population can be viewed in terms of income employment opportunities business opportunities etc. Taman Negara Malaysia (TNM) is now one of the most important tourism destinations in the country. The government is using this opportunity to distribute the benefits of tourism development among the local population. Direct economic impact of the development in TNM arises from two sources; employment of local population by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks and the expenditure made by the Department for development operation and maintenance of public and recreational facilities in TNM. The activities of the Department produces fifteen jobs for each staff employed. The indirect economic impact is realized through the expenditure of non-local visitors for facilities and services in TNM. The indirect impact is measured in terms of job created from each ringgit spent by the tourists. One hundred and seventy eight jobs are created outside the tourism sector for each employee in TNM. The total economic impact from the tourism development in TNM is low due mainly to the large leakages to outside region. The shortage of local industries and commercial sector to cater for the needs of local population the Department and tourists causes a high proportion of the total expenditure is to be spent on imported items.
